Specialized Classes

Mastering HDR Challenges • 07/11/2009 - 0712/2009

Over the course of two days, Uwe Steinmueller and Brad Polt-Jones will thoroughly explore the camera settings and major software tools needed for high quality HDR. This workshop is a hands-on combination of shooting in the field with the instructors, followed by extensive workflow demonstrations back in the classroom. We will cover the theory behind HDR capture, practical shooting strategies, composition and exposure, as well as post-processing. This is an intermediate to advanced class for those who have had prior experience with HDR capture.

July 11-12, San Francisco

HDR Fort Point

"I enjoyed your workshop a great deal. I felt that you were giving us cutting edge techniques. I don't know of any one who is experimenting and sharing the results in the way that you are have done. Brad's knowledgeable assistance and his fabulous equipment is a unique situation for a workshop. I may try to take it again."
(October 2007, Larry Larsen)

High Dynamic Range Photography with Photomatix Pro

The high contrast of normal sunny daylight scenes is often hard to capture with a single shot. HDR photography circumvents these limitations by combining multiple exposure values in a single image. This one-day workshop is a combination of hands-on shooting and classroom instruction that explores advanced techniques in tonemapping using Photomatix Pro to create the HDR image.

What you’ll learn:

• What is HDR
• How does it work
• Why is HDR important
• Capturing multiple shots
• Balance f-stop, exposure and ISO
• Good bracketing sequences
• Merging images to HDR
• What alignment methods work best
• Limits of HDR merging (moving objects, moving camera)
• Why does HDR help with noise
• Tonemapping with Photomatix Pro
• Lens defects and how to handle them: Chromatic aberrations (CA), distortions
• Correcting perspective in Photoshop
• Why image stabilized lenses are helpful
• HDR and B&W
• Freehand vs. Tripod
• Composition ideas
